How Do We Know

Of all things that interfere with faithfully following Jesus, the most severe is diverting our minds from the Word of God. John 21:18-22 warns believers that following youthful lusts (v. 18; 2 Timothy 2:22) and comparing ourselves with others (v. 22; Galatians 6:4 -5) interfere with following Christ. However, false information can also obstruct one’s faithful Christian walk. John makes the effort at the end of his Gospel to refute a lie that was circulating in the church (v. 23). Follow Me

The genuine believer loves and follows Jesus. Loving and following Jesus means obeying and focusing all of one’s heart and attention on Him. Jesus said: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15) and the writer of Hebrews commands believers to run the Christian race with endurance, “fixing our eyes on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1 – 2). Jesus commands Peter twice to follow Him (vv. 19, 22). Besides Jesus’ commands to follow, John 21:18 – 25 reveals 3 major impediments to doing so. Loving and Following Jesus

The finale of the Gospel of John is all about loving and following Jesus. 3 times Jesus says, “Do you love Me?” (21:15, 16, 17) and twice Jesus says, “Follow Me!” (21:19, 22). Following Jesus faithfully is all about first loving Jesus. If one loves Jesus, one will follow Jesus faithfully, even to the point of death (21:18 -19; Philippians 1:21).
