Marriage and Divorce

Introduction:

Biblical teaching about marriage and divorce in the New Testament can be divided into two parts.

The first part is the biblical teaching of Jesus in the Gospels. The second part is the biblical teaching of Paul, in the New Testament Epistles. The biblical teaching of Jesus in the Gospels reveals God’s will for marriage for all men, regardless of creed or ethnicity, since the creation of the world.

Whatever changes and accommodations the Old Testament Jews may have made to God’s original design (Matthew 19:8), God’s will for marriage is given in Matthew 5:32, 19:9; Mark 10:11 and Luke 16:18.The second part, the biblical teaching of Paul in the New Testament epistles, is contained in 1 Corinthians 7:1-40 and teaches believers how to uphold God’s immutable standard for marriage in the Church, especially in the midst of the immoral, unbelieving society outside of the Church. Corinth was a city known for its low moral and ethical standards. Therefore Paul’s instructions on how to maintain God’s marital standards in the Church in the midst of the godless, secular culture of Corinth, gives current-day believers all they need to know in order to maintain God’s standards for marriage in today’s society.
