A Gospel Primer for Christians

“A Gospel Primer for Christians” by Milton Vincent is one of those books that will grip your attention from the first page and will not let go until the end. This is an excellent book, not only for introducing people to the gospel message, but a great encouragement for those who already believe in it.

Just under 100 pages, this book will serve as a valuable tool for the mind and heart of everyone who seriously desires to mortify his sinful flesh. Truly, this book expounds the gospel in a most powerful, honest and engaging way.

The basic purpose of “A Gospel Primer” is to teach the reader to rehearse the Gospel daily. To rehearse/ meditate on the Gospel daily means to remind yourself of the Gospel in its entirety, letting its profound meaning change your heart.

This book is unevenly broken into four sections. The first part, “Reasons to Rehearse the Gospel Daily,” is the longest and perhaps the best part of the book. In this chapter the author provides 31 powerful paragraphs, which help to rehearse the gospel daily. By daily reading each section, one can rehearse the riches of Christ, which are seen in the gospel. “The glory of God is the most powerful agent of transformation available to mankind. It is so powerful that it transforms those who merely gaze upon it… but where do I find God’s glory to behold? … the Bible indicates that, outside of heaven, the glory of God in its thickest density dwells inside the gospel” (p.17).

The second part of the book “A Gospel Narrative,” consists of 41 short declarations of the gospel. These are broken down into four parts; The Glory of God; My Sin Against God; God’s Work on My Behalf; My Salvation. This section powerfully reinforces the truth about God’s grace, personal sin, Christ’ work and the promise of salvation. This is perhaps the most practical part of the book. By rehearsing these short statements, one can preach to his or herself different facets of the gospel.

The third section is written in a beautiful reflection of the gospel in the form of poetry.

The final portion of the book describes the personal experience of the author with the gospel, and his journey to a deeper appreciation of the love of Christ. It is interesting, and you will find it edifying as well.

The whole book is literally saturated with Scripture. One cannot read a single page without reading a number of bible texts in the footnotes. By learning how to preach the gospel to yourself day after day, this book will help you to experience the life-changing power of the gospel in your life.
