Apologetics

Apologetics (Gr. apologeomai - ‘to make a legal defense’) is the study of how Christians defend their faith. Secular psychology, humanism, philosophy, heresy, atheistic science, man-made religion, cults, mythology, superstition, secularism, Post-modern thinking, the occult and others attack the Christian faith. Peter said: “Sanctify Christ as LORD in you hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence” (1 Peter 3:15). Every Christian must be ready and able to defend God’s Truth.

Christians have to witness to the existence of God and refute those who contradict (with gentleness and reverence). The Christian is a witness, not a converter. The only One Who can compel belief is The Holy Spirit, Who uses a Christian’s words to change the heart of another. Ultimately, The Holy Spirit uses the words of the witness of Scripture to produce belief in humans.

Standard ways of presenting God include the Cosmological Approach (the creation witnesses to God); the Teleological Approach (order and design in our world witness to God); the Ontological Approach (the concept of God inside man witnesses to God); the Ethical Approach (there can be no right or wrong without God) and the Presuppositional Approach (there can be no objective reality at all without God).

The most effective approach is the Gospel Approach: presenting the Scriptural truth of Jesus Christ’s complete and saving work on the Cross to sinners.
