Prayer is intimate communication with God. Prayer occurs individually and in groups. Prayer occurs standing, sitting, on the knees, prostrate on the ground and in other postures. Prayer occurs day and night, privately and publicly, during worship and before food, in peaceful settings and in a variety of dangerous and critical circumstances. Prayer is premeditated, composed, rehearsed or spontaneous. Prayer includes adoration, confession, thanksgiving, consultation, requests, questions and deep emotion. Prayer is for God’s glory and purposes, for the Church and for the Gospel, for nations and rulers, family and friends, for spiritual and material matters and for oneself.

Prayer is sincere and reverent: without pride, artificial affection, unnecessary words and outward show. Prayer expresses love, trust and dependence on God. Prayer aligns one’s affections and motivations with God’s. Prayer does not impress or manipulate God.

Prayer is to God the Father from the heart, and must involve the aid of Christ and The Holy Spirit. Prayer brings individual peace and God’s special blessing.
